With exterior decorative concrete applications, especially in Utah, you have to think about snow removal. When a driveway is colored and stamped to look like stone, it is harder to maintain. More care must be taken when shoveling to avoid chipping the edges of the patterns. It helps if the color is continuous within the slab, rather than an overlay, which will expose a different surface beneath if it separates.In terms of remodeling, replacing existing floors with concrete is generally not an option because of the weight and depth of a new concrete slab. Concrete can be used in a new addition (where the floor is a new concrete slab on grade or ground level) or when a concrete basement floor is removed so it can be lowered and replaced. Options to use concrete as countertops or in other limited decorative applications in a remodel are much broader.One interior trend is to extend the exterior walkway into the foyer or entry of the home, creating a smooth and seamless transition from outside to inside. When used in a transition from an interior space to a back patio, decorative concrete ties the two spaces together and complements outside living spaces.Since removing an existing concrete slab is a messy and labor- intensive proposition, rather than removing the slab and starting over, it is possible to transform existing concrete by applying an overlay. This overlay is a cement material placed over the existing concrete about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch thick. The overlay can then be stamped, etched and/or stained to create the look you want.Also, concrete is porous, so if you choose a concrete countertop or floor, make sure you have the right sealant to discourage stains. Concrete floors can also be cold and must be insulated so as not to transfer the cold from the ground into the slab. An ideal solution is to install radiant heat, where you bury pipes or cables (depending on whether it is an electric or hydronic system) in the floor to heat it.Moving from driveways, walkways and pool decks, this chic trend has found its way inside -- through the entryway and into family and dining rooms, bathrooms and kitchen and utility areas, not to mention fireplaces, countertops and backsplashes.While using decorative concrete inside a home may result in the interior look you seek, it has some disadvantages you should consider: A room with concrete floors can be noisy. Concrete counters are unforgiving when you drop something, and concrete floors can be uncomfortable if you are standing for a long time.One of the most common decorative concrete techniques is stamped concrete. Stamped concrete is a technique applied to new concrete where rubber molds are pressed into the surface of the concrete before it sets up. Concrete can also be colored by adding pigment when the cement, sand and water are mixed. They can make concrete any color you want and make it resemble any pattern you want -- from stone to slate to wood.Decorative concrete is a trend that started more than a decade ago in California and has spread in popularity across the country. Although it has been around for a while now, it is still expensive and considered a high-end option. Prices are determined by the size of the job and the artistic method requested, but costs can range anywhere from $1 to $20 a square foot. Why are these heaters called "vent free"?Why are vent free heaters so popular?But are they safe?Yes. All vent free heaters for home use must have an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS), a safety mechanism built into the pilot assembly. This feature shuts off the appliance should the oxygen level in the room become insufficient for complete combustion of the gas. How Do I Choose The Right Garage Heater?

Choosing the right permanent heater for your garage or small shop can be a daunting task, given the fact that there are so many options now available. So How do I choose just the right garage heater for my space? To help narrow down the choices, ask yourself the following questions.

As for heater sizing, keep in mind that it can cost 80 to 90 percent more to heat an uninsulated garage compared to one that is well insulated. If you intend on maintaing a comfortable termperature inside the garage during the cold months, insulating is a must. Some homeowners may simply want to take the chill off when tooling around for short periods of time near a workbench or other spat within the garage. In such cases, insulation is not as critical. If insulation is poor, we recommend choosing a heater that is not forced air. In other words, choose an infra-red radiant heater, which produces no drafts and standing beneath it feels just like standing in the sun.4) Do I want forced air or radiant?11) Will I set the thermostat to keep the garage comfortable 24/7 or will I use the heater for only short periods?1) Do I have a gas line available or easily accessible? What about adequate gas pressure?9) How big is my garage?2) If there is no gas, do I have 240V electrical power available or easily accessible?Other options for heating the garage include wall mounted infra-red radiant and forced air heaters. For options, consider Rinnai, a manufacturer of residential vent free radiant heaters, forced air vent free heaters and vented wall heaters. While designed primarily for the dwelling space of the home, these heaters are excellent for garages, small shops, greenhouses, out butildings, cabins and more. When installed in garages, we recommend mounting them at least 2 feet off the floor, which should meet or exceed local codes in most areas of the U.S.8) What is my budget?Most two or three car garages require between 25,000 and 35,000 BTU's. An electric heater with a rating of 10.0 KW is about right (Note: to convert watts into BTU's, multiply the total watts - in this case 10,000 watts, by 3.413). Remember, electric heaters draw a lot of amps and usally require a dedicated circuit from the electrical panel. Older, smaller homes sometimes have panels that are too small to expand and are unable to accomodate the power requirements of a high amp heater. Check with your electrician to help determine if your panel is adequate. A panel upgrade may be necessary.Gas forced air heaters do require 120V power, in addition to the gas line, yet the electrical draw is much, much less than with an all electric heater. What about energy consumption? Costs of gas verus electric varies all across North America. Your local utilities can help you figure out cost differences. That said, natural gas heaters have always been much cheaper to operate. Propane fired heaters can cost a bit more to run.If a gas heater is what you're after, you have a bunch of options. Forced air heaters, or "unit" heaters, are very common. They heat up quickly and are generally more energy efficient than electric unit heaters (comparing BTU for BTU). Choose from brands such as Enerco, Modine and Reznor.10) Will the heater I choose require installation by a heating professional or can I do it myself?First, if no gas line available or there is no practical way to get gas to the garage space, your selection process just became a lot easier. That's because your only choice is an electric heater and there are only a few good options. There are several electric heater manufacturers to choose from including Chromalox, Qmark and Fostoria (TPI). These brands offer reliable forced air models suitable for residential and commercial heating. These eletcric space heaters are normally suspended from the ceiling or side wall with optional mounting brackets.3) What are the energy costs of gas versus electric in my area?For gas radiant heat, Enerco and Superior Radiant are two excellent brands that offer residential approved gas infra-red radiant tube heaters. Unlike forced air heaters, radiant tube heaters offer the benefit of increased creature comfort, a lot less noise and higher energy efficiency. They are a bit more expensive initially, but they can pay themselves back in a very short time. For the budget minded, Enerco offers the HeatStar H25N (Nat. Gas) or H22L (LP Gas) vent free high intensity infra-red heater. This heater is designed to heat 550 sq. feet or more, depending on insulation. It comes with wall mounting bracket, thermostat and thermostat wire and operates on a millivolt control, so it requires no electricty. Just hang the heater, connect the thermostat, run the gas line and you're done. Total installation cost can be as little as $500.00. The H25N/H22L is one of the most popular garage heaters in North America.5) Is my garage insulated?In most areas of the united states, the cost of electricity is higher than the cost of gas. Even so, electric heaters do offer advantages. First, Electric heaters require no flue. If you are concerned about running a new flue through your roof or side wall, an electric heater suspended from the wall or ceiling may be the answer. Chef Central: home cooks mean serious business

Custom home owners are more dedicated to fine cooking than ever before. Many no longer think of preparing a meal as a chore, but as a luxury to which they devote considerable time and money. And to create beautiful, great-tasting food, they need well-planned, personalized kitchens, like the ones on the following pages. As these kitchens demonstrate, builders, architects, designers, and their clients are researching exotic woods to find one-of-a-kind textures and colors. They're borrowing ideas from restaurant kitchens and designating specialized prep centers and stations. They're coming up with clever ways to create storage, often designing caterers' kitchens and butler's pantries. They're using metal in interesting ways, most frequently as countertops and backsplashes. And, as always, they're placing top priority on making the kitchen open to the rest of the house and the outdoors.

Remodeling a historic residence takes a lot of soul searching. At some point the project needs to either follow the stylistic template set by the original building, or break away and follow its own path. The owners of this grand 1920s Chicago condominium decided on the latter, with harmonious results. Their apartment featured a small, cramped kitchen that felt cut off from the rooms around it. They asked Wheeler Kearns Architects to open up the kitchen to the dining and sitting areas, allowing light and views to flow unimpeded through the space. "They wanted to make those rooms a contrast to the front of the unit," says project architect Joy Meek. ** So Meek and principal in charge Dan Wheeler abandoned the elaborate molding that characterizes the rest of the apartment for a sleeker look--stainless steel counters, cherry cabinetry, poured concrete floors, and new contemporary windows. The stainless-steel cased beam running above the island conceals mechanicals, and it provides a handy place for down- and up-lighting. The extra illumination is necessary, since the space isn't just for socializing. The island's hard-working north side contains a dishwasher, wine refrigerator, microwave, and warming drawer, all of which supplement the refrigerator, range, and oven on the same side of the room. One person preparing a meat can converse with guests or family members sitting on the opposite side of the island without compromising his or her work space. And the kitchen segues straight into the dining room on one end and sitting area on the other--a very modern idea indeed.Ultimate ExpressionThe new plan replaces the opening between the kitchen and dining room with a sweep of floor-to-ceiling translucent pocket doors. Bloomberg centered a large window and sink on the opening to share light between the rooms. "The doors tie the two sides together," Bloomberg says. "We also used very warm materials, which help to carry through the palette of an older house." Stylistic differences are neutralized with cherry cabinets that complement the house's pine floors, Italian slate flooring with rich color variations, and a concrete countertop.Eastern ElementsBalinese buildings and Japanese tansu chests served as design motifs for this remodeled Del Mar, Calif., kitchen. Architect Wendy Von Kalinowski and builder Brian Beesan worked closely with the owners to incorporate lush, exotic woods like Hawaiian koa and rosewood. Wrought-iron fittings continue the Indonesian/Asian influence, while honed black granite counters complement the rich woods. According to the clients' wishes, Von Kalinowski created a plan that facilitates cooking and entertaining, with a long mahogany table that slides out from under the island when more space is needed. A wood-burning masonry fireplace adds to the relaxed ambience, while three skylights let in plenty of natural light. ** Because of all the ventilation in the kitchen--pocket doors, large operable windows over the sink, a ceiling fan, and a ceiling vent--the clients and Von Kalinowski decided to leave out the range hood they'd originally planned. "The hood would have detracted from the other elements," says Von Kalinowski. "The clients wanted to be able to see out the big window over the sink." Now they have their choice of views--the palm trees outside that window, or the shady oasis of the courtyard.A cooking area to the left as you enter the kitchen now occupies the former powder room, which was moved to the stair landing. At the far end is a square bar sink and compact computer space with a fiat-screen monitor mounted beneath wall cabinets. And an existing 4-foot-by-4-foot pantry is hidden behind a full-height cabinetry door. "We wanted to keep everything very flush to make it look neat and clean, which is what the clients wanted," Bloomberg says. Clean sweep

With its strong horizontal lines and clean details, the 18-foot-long kitchen in a renovated Washington, D.C., row house is minimalist without appearing ultramodern. Even a backsplash was deemed gratuitous; the aluminum window sits right on the countertop, which in turn slips between cabinetry under the microwave. "We liked the idea of the horizontal plane of counter not being stopped and connecting to the outside," architect Janet Bloomberg says.

** Details Designer Fu-Tung Cheng selected bamboo cabinetry and flooring for its beauty, durability, and sustainability. "In a span of 5, 10, or 15 years, you can grow a full forest of bamboo," he says. "Its hardness quotient falls somewhere between that of oak and maple."This Napa Valley, Calif., wine country kitchen represents the culmination of designer Fu-Tung Cheng's 20 years of experience. It's stuffed full of ideas about materials, space, and efficiency, all working to enhance the owner's gourmet lifestyle. "Cooking is the owner's avocation--it's his form of creativity and entertainment," says Cheng. So the room's island holds a range, built-in wok, grill, and deep fryer. Three strategically placed sinks--one for making beverages, one for food prep, and one for cleanup--serve three different purposes, and three dishwashers ensure there's never a backup of dirty dishes. ** Because of the house's overall architecture (the rammed-earth, wood, and glass structure designed by Seattle firm Cutler Anderson Architects has a massive, organic feel) Cheng needed to make sure the kitchen left an equally strong, solid impression. The hefty island and some walls and counters consist of Geocrete, his proprietary line of custom concrete infused with fossils, auto transmission parts, and other found objects. "It's like looking for antiques," he says of his fossil-finding process. "I go to rock shows, rock stores, and now sometimes the Internet." A 10-foot-long range hood, also designed by Cheng, rids the space of extra odors and heat. In addition to that, we don't have to spend precious hours worrying about designing the perfect tile backsplash.In my case, I must say that the best friend is lovely. She asks questions, gives her opinion, but her "way" is very sensitive to both me and her friend. My vibe toward her has always been very welcoming, so maybe that has made a slight difference. If your vibe is somewhat negative, that could make a difference in your case, so I'd look at that as a possible contentious situation.Since removing an existing concrete slab is a messy and labor- intensive proposition, rather than removing the slab and starting over, it is possible to transform existing concrete by applying an overlay. This overlay is a cement material placed over the existing concrete about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch thick. The overlay can then be stamped, etched and/or stained to create the look you want.In my case, it is the same thing. Her best friend is in on every single decision, no matter how large or how small. I even printed a set of plans for her and she was there at the contract signing (however I didn't give her a copy of the contract). I have had all the same thoughts as you are having about your situation.I think with ceramic tile, you have to mark it up to make any profit on the job at all. Designs can be quite time consuming, and you need to be paid for the work you are putting in!* Broken or abandoned china: Even if it is no longer of service on the table, china can become a serviceable and spunky mosaic backsplash.Today, contractors can transform this typically utilitarian building material into whatever you can imagine. They can make concrete any color you want and make it resemble any pattern you want -- from stone to slate to wood.It is a closet system if that makes any difference. In addition, they offer homeowners an exciting opportunity to literally try their hands at being creative. Step-by-step books, videos and hands-on training are now readily available for homeowners to confidently engage in such do-it-yourself (DIY) projects as building concrete countertops.

With the completion of the project and the creative work done, Chris and Ali admit that their biggest challenge was building the concrete forms. �Particularly for the sink cut-out, which has radius corners and two different size basins,� says Chris.Chris and Ali took special note that despite the tight working space of their basement, their collaborative work ran smoothly from pour to finish. �Like the rest of our remodeling project, building the concrete countertop brought us closer together,� says Chris. �We work very well together. It starts from the fact that we communicate very well and our design ideas complement each other.�Chris happens to be no stranger to concrete: �My interest goes back several years when I was building restaurants and retail spaces. I installed concrete countertops and worked with concrete artisans doing integral color and stained concrete floors.�1. To give your cabinets a special flair, use three different stains. Use one lighter stain on the upper cabinets, one slightly darker on the drawers and an even darker one on the bottom cabinets. Add a little pigment in a primary color (red, blue or yellow) to add an additional dimension and a little *pop.*Despite a couple of minor learning curves, Chris maintains that there is an overwhelming sense of accomplishment upon completing their concrete countertop. �The best part is seeing and feeling the finished product and knowing we did it!� It�s been said that if a couple can survive a home remodel � especially a DIY project � together, they can survive anything.Chris and Ali agree that the most interesting addition to the kitchen is the concrete countertop. You are visiting a friend that has just had a beautiful kitchen remodel done. It is a lovely kitchen with stunning granite countertops and a sharp looking tile backsplash. The glass door cabinets are filled with the good china. Somehow after spending a small fortune the room still looks a bit drab.

Their kitchen, 10 feet wide by 15 feet long (150 sq. ft.), didn�t offer much room for Chris and Ali to work � but that didn�t stop the big plans they had for their narrow kitchen. They wanted to have a logical cooking zone with a work triangle, plenty of counter space and still have enough room to accommodate a dining area.�We both enjoy the process of designing and creating our own living space to fit how we live. This applies to the space we occupy as well as the details within it,� says Ali. �We both like the idea of working with our hands, using materials that are natural, accessible [�] and flexible.� Chris added, �Concrete counters are beautiful, cool, earthy, solid, and you just want to touch them. Five Easy Ways to Give Your Kitchen Designer Wow!

A beautiful kitchen is the heart of any home (even for those of us who spend most of our cooking time around the microwave!) Time spent together in the kitchen can bring a family closer together and make wonderful memories (although my own memories of doing dishes as a teenager are less than pleasant - something about dishwater being *disgusting!*) Turning your plain kitchen into something special isn*t as hard as you might think. Here are a few simple ideas which can make your kitchen a designer showcase.

In a bathroom lighting is very important and many times overlooked. Placing recessed lights above can cause grief if a supplemental light is not placed on the wall near the vanity. When shaving or applying makeup those overhead lights cause unwanted shadows. By placing an additional light such as a wall sconce can eliminate that problem.4. Tired cabinet doors? Cut out the middle of the doors, leaving a two inch edge all around. Stale fabric panels to the back of the doors. Cover the staples with fabric trim glued with a hot glue gun. You can use any fabric from elegant to country, stripes to plaid, or gingham to quilted.Recessed lighting and a combination of switching options can give a room many personalities to suit any mood. From bright light for working conditions to subtle lighting for a romantic setting can all be accomplished with switches and dimmers. Accent lighting to highlight certain aspects of a project that were carefully planned but would barely be noticed otherwise. Cove lighting above crown moldings helps focus attention to the detail of the room.Try one of these ideas or use them to jumpstart your own creative imagination.
